Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert hobbled off the field in the third quarter of Sunday's 20-10 road loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers due to soreness from a previous ankle injury and was seen in a walking boot after the game.

The NFL Network reported that Herbert was in a walking boot following the game, which he exited a play after taking a hit from Pittsburgh defensive tackle Cameron Heyward on a sack.

Herbert, who never returned to the game, acknowledged afterwards that he felt soreness increasing throughout the game from a previous injury, a high ankle sprain, that put him at questionable entering the contest.

"As soon as I saw Justin get up, first sign of any limp he was coming out of the game," Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said.

Herbert went to the sideline as the clock ticked under seven minutes in the third following a 1-yard rush by J.K. Dobbins. One play earlier, the Los Angeles signal-caller seemingly got his ankle caught under Heyward on Heyward's sack.

Taylor Heinicke took over under center for the Chargers, completing 2 of 2 passes for 24 yards, but Los Angeles was shut out the rest of the way.

Prior to exiting, Herbert completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.

Herbert, 26, missed two practices and was limited in another this week due to the high ankle sprain.

The Chargers (2-1) host the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday. Kansas City (2-0) faces the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday night.
