Jasprit Bumrah produced a moment of magic to dismiss Shadman Islam in Bangladesh’s first innings on Day 2 of the 1st Test at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
In just the first over of the innings, Bumrah executed a perfect setup. Bowling several outswingers, he lured Shadman into believing the next ball would follow suit. However, Bumrah switched angles and came around the wicket, delivering a length ball that held its line and straightened towards the off stump. Expecting movement away, Shadman shouldered arms, but the ball crashed into the off-stump, leaving him stunned and giving India their first breakthrough. The precise delivery showed Bumrah’s mastery of seam bowling, with the change in angle and subtle lack of swing completely deceiving the batter. Celebrating with arms raised, Bumrah was joined by his teammates as the Chennai crowd erupted in applause.
Bangladesh’s reply to India’s imposing first innings target got off to a difficult start, as they lost an early wicket to Jasprit Bumrah’s pace. By the end of first session on Day 2, the visitors had reached 26/3 as Akash Deep picked picked two wickets in the last over before lunch. Mushfiqur Rahim, on 4*, and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, on 15*, are currently at the crease, aiming to stabilize the innings. With a deficit of 368 runs still looming, Bangladesh faces a crucial rebuilding phase to avoid further early damage and mount a solid response.
Earlier on Day 2, India built on their solid foundation set by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who both played crucial roles in lifting the team to a competitive total of 376. After being 144/6 at one stage, Ashwin (113) and Jadeja (86) put together a match-defining partnership of 199 runs for the seventh wicket. Their efforts helped India recover from early setbacks when Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud ripped through the top order, claiming 5 wickets for 83 runs.
Jadeja was dismissed just short of his century, but Ashwin, displaying great patience and technique, reached his 113 before falling towards the end of the innings. Taskin Ahmed provided some late breakthroughs, finishing with 3 wickets as India’s tail added crucial runs to push the total past 370.
