The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will mark its ninth edition in 2024, solidifying its status as the world’s premier global T20 tournament. Since its inaugural event in 2007, which saw India emerged victorious, the T20 World Cup has grown in stature and excitement with each passing season.

Despite India’s triumph in the first edition, they have not been able to lift the trophy again. The tournament has seen various teams showcasing their prowess, with the West Indies and England being notable for their multiple victories. The 2022 edition witnessed Pakistan facing off against England in the final, where England clinched their second title, joining the West Indies as the only team to have won the T20 World Cup more than once. This upcoming tournament, co-hosted by the United States of America (USA) and West Indies, promises to be a thrilling spectacle as teams from around the world compete for the coveted trophy.

Mohammad Kaif’s semi-finalist prediction

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has made his predictions for the semi-finalists of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Kaif foresees India, New Zealand, West Indies and either Australia or Pakistan making it to the top four. His confidence in New Zealand’s consistency in ICC events is noteworthy. Despite often being underestimated, New Zealand have a remarkable record of reaching the latter stages of major tournaments, demonstrating resilience and a knack for performing under pressure. His mention of the West Indies highlighted the advantage of playing on home soil, which could be a significant factor in their performance.

“Somehow New Zealand find their way to be in the top four; in the ICC events, you can’t write them off so add New Zealand. I think West Indies, since they’re playing at their home, might be a dangerous side,” Kaif was quoted as saying by PTI.

“I don’t know, maybe Australia or Pakistan; one of them can come through. If Pakistan comes, then if we meet them in the semis or finals, it will be great, India vs. Pakistan finals, why not,” the 43-year-old added.

India’s prospects in the T20 World Cup 2024

Kaif believed that the current Indian squad is stronger and more balanced compared to the one that reached the semi-finals in the 2022 World Cup in Australia. He emphasized that the key factor in this optimism is India’s bolstered bowling attack, featuring experienced and effective spinners such as Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja. Additionally, the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the previous World Cup, is expected to significantly strengthen India’s bowling lineup.

“We have a much better bowling attack compared to last time; we had Chahal but we couldn’t play him in the first XI. This year we have Kuldeep Yadav, we have Axar Patel, Jadeja, good spinners. All very experienced and wicket-takers; they can change the game on their day. Bumrah didn’t play last year; he will be playing. I feel he’s going to be a key player in this World Cup,” Kaif concluded.
