Chris Shula was promoted to defensive coordinator by the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday amid reports that the Miami Dolphins were interested in interviewing him for their defensive coordinator vacancy, multiple media outlets reports.

Shula, 37, is the grandson of Dolphins franchise icon Don Shula. He has been on the Rams' defensive staff under head coach Sean McVay since 2017.

He was the Rams' pass-rush coordinator and linebackers coach in 2023 and their pass-game coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2022. Shula worked with the linebackers from 2017-21 after spending two seasons as a defensive quality control coach with the then-San Diego Chargers from 2015-16.

The Rams' defensive coordinator job opened when Raheem Morris exited to become the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Chris Shula is the son of former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Dave Shula.

Don Shula is the winningest coach in NFL history with 328 career regular-season victories over 33 seasons with the Baltimore Colts (1963-69) and the Dolphins (1970-95). He guided Miami to the NFL's only unbeaten season in 1972 and wins in Super Bowls VII and VIII. The four-time AP NFL Coach of the Year was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997 and died in 2020 at the age of 90.
